Next, my research into basic LED bulbs reveals a couple of primary drawbacks to their design. Many, if not most, LED lamps that aren't larger end priced have a quite simple Rectifier / Voltage Regulator circuit. All this is fine with the exception of two most important issues. 1) Line spikes. In areas the place the source is poorly regulated or is topic to lightening strikes can really devastate these designs. The other strategy is utilizing an energetic SMPS device to handle the voltage. Managing heat is a problem in this case. I've several that have failed ( some inside a few weeks ) because of extreme heat buildup AND a scarcity of internal ventilation. 2) Surroundings ( ie, heat ). If the bulb is positioned in an overhead fixture the place heat is not allowed to flee, its destruction is assured. Another is outdoors. The bulb does not have to be utterly sealed if it is in a protected area. Even in a desk or bedside lamp, heat will kill many of these designs. Principally, for my part, this is because there isn't a ventilation of the interior electronics. I have no idea what sort of electronics these comprise, however I am impressed enough to buy a couple of more and proceed the examination. One other good thing about LED's usually is low temp environments. Florescents have an issue with working in low temperatures ( even in Houston ). LEDs handle the flickering and low output that a chilly setting brings.
